Pinewood Stables OyPinewood Stables Oy (’Pinewood’) is an 80 hectare EU-certified organic farm in the Saari village of Mäntsälä, Southern Finland. Pinewood Stables Oy was founded in 1997 and has been active ever since.
Organic farming implements best environmental and climate practices. No chemical pesticides are used, and natural fertilizer from the farm's own circular economy is utilized on the arable land. Fields are always kept covered with vegetation. For us, ecological living and sustainability is at the heart of all our activities, and we are in the annual organic farming control of the Finnish Food Authority. |
Pinewood Stables OyPinewood breeds horses for dressage, showjumping, eventing and for riding schools. The company has a long history in operating a riding school and offering horse riding courses and camps. Pinewood is especially known for its professionalism, individual care and skilled horse training.
In the last 17 years, the company has also developed and tested its own innovation, heat recovery from horse manure. We can proudly say that, in addition to heating the kitchen, bathroom and tack room in the stables, this system is now the primary source of heat in our new Guesthouse. In this way, Pinewood is a part of creating a cleaner future through the use of circular economy strategies. Such sustainable agricultural initiatives contribute to the prevention of advancing climate change. |
Horse riding at PinewoodPinewood offers year-round personalized riding lessons and trail rides both individually and in small groups as well as popular courses and riding camps for adults. Camps can include different activities such as picking berries and mushrooms, sing-alongs, yoga and relaxing massages - or you can just sit back and unwind. For children there are safe Icelandic horses available. Possible Covid-19 restrictions and measures are of course taken into account.
With the completion of the new Guesthouse and the Finnhorses, that we are soon looking forward to welcoming to the farm, we can offer an even wider range of services. The Finnhorse is a traditional, national breed of Finland known for it's versatility and good temperament, which makes it suitable for riders of different skill levels. Pinewood also offers holistic boarding for horses. Visitors might enjoy following the development of foals that we usually have born in the spring. |
Future plans for horse riding servicesPinewood owns five advanced level horses, of which three are also good breeding mares. In addition, there are Icelandic horses for trail riding, children and Equine-Assisted social work. From Pinewood's 35 hectares of organically cultivated fields we get our own horse feed and pastures and we can ride through our 35 hectares of forests to the quiet village roads for hours of trail rides. On our large riding arena we train dressage and showjumping.
Our future plans for expanding our horse riding services include acquiring two high quality Finnhorses to accommodate riders of all levels. These Finnhorses can also be bred so that our customers can take part in following the growth and training of foals. Organizing different courses and trainings will continue and expand. |
Equine-Assisted social workHevosvoimala (in English 'Horse power') is a horse stables for good encounters, where every person wants to learn how to act respectfully, listening and encouraging and can also expect this from others. Hevosvoimala is lead by Ulla Linjama-Lehtinen, a certified social worker, sociology major and wellness coach with extensive experience in the field.
Everyone needs to be seen, heard and accepted! Hevosvoimala offers training, workshops, therapeutic real-world encounters to support the wellbeing of the mind - free of performance and problem orientation, diagnoses and symptoms. Individuals, families and groups as well as work and other communities are all welcome. |
An oasis in the midst of citiesPinewood is an oasis of tranquility in a charming rural village, that is still conveniently close to major cities in Southern Finland - within a little over an hour's drive lives around ⅓ of Finland's population. Around the yard there are eight hectares of well-managed and fenced horse pastures in the summer, where the horses can enjoy fresh grass in herds, as is natural for them. Every horse still has their own stall even in the summers; if needed, they can be brought inside to shelter from insects, heat or cold.
Pinewood offers accommodation close to nature in the Pinewood Guesthouse, built out of glue-free massive timber, straw and clay, as well as different nature-related and equestrian activities. |
Pinewood GuesthousePinewood's goal for the summer of 2021 is to complete the construction work of the Pinewood Guesthouse. Published in several magazines, this "innovation of the century" (BuildingMagazine, April 2021) has combined local materials such as Aalto Haitek wave-layered timber, Ehta wood fibre insulation, straw, clay and wood from nearby forests.
Thanks to its healthy indoor air, natural materials and ecological construction method, the building has aroused interest all around the world. It has been presented at trade fairs in Japan from which, in addition to domestic tourists, we expect a large number of customers once the Covid-19 pandemic has eased. |
Pinewood Guesthouse
The main entrance of the Guesthouse is equipped with a long ramp making it easily accessible for all. The inside surface of the outer walls is clay, behind which is the straw insulation before the load-bearing glue-free solid timber. The partition walls are made of healthy MGO-boards and the heated clay floor utilises energy collected from the muck house of the horse stables.
Glues and other additives have been avoided in the construction of this building, and we have used aspen wood that cleans the indoor air. The house is built on a beam foundation that preserves the environment; from all four bedrooms you step right in to the forest with blueberries and lingonberries. In February 2021 the house is 80 % ready and we are planning to open for business in the summer of 2021.

Pinewood's carbon footprintPinewood Stables' carbon footprint is very low: the straw used as bedding for the horses is from nearby fields and the organic hay, used as the main feed for the horses, is from our own fields. The thick layer of straw bedding is soft and comfortable for horses to lie down on, which affects the overall wellbeing of the horses in a positive way.
The straw bedding is further utilized in the heat recovery system in the muck house, where the organic matter left after the process is returned to the field, improving carbon sequestration and productivity. |
Heat recovery systemSince 2004 we here at Pinewood have developed and tested heat recovery from horse manure. The system has functioned well and it has been presented as the Finnish government's flagship project for utilizing horse manure in the years 2016 - 2018. In the fall of 2020 the updated version of the system was taken into use in the heating of the Pinewood Guesthouse. The developed method is relatively simple in structure and easily duplicated in any horse stables.
Additional testing and measurements are needed, but after we have a finished product, the company is prepared to sell the concept even worldwide. This is expected to contribute to a significant increase in the turnover of the company. |
Pinewood's futureIn the long run, Pinewood is going to be a more self-sufficient animal farm - a Dream Farm, where operations and finances are managed well, and in a humane way. The aim is to protect the 35 hectares of PEFC certified forests while developing controlled building of residential houses on the land.
We need to pay attention to the changing environment, but today's challenges push people back closer to nature and animals - this is something that we want to provide for our customers, and of course primarily our shareholders. Welcome to our future! |
